Become an Examiner

The Board of Examiners is a very important asset to the Shingo Prize. Examiners consist of practitioners and academicians who have a sound understanding and application of Lean improvement concepts, systems, and techniques. Each Examiner attends the Shingo Approach to Operational Excellence workshop to learn about the Shingo Prize model, criteria and scoring method. To become an examiner, please download the application form below and submit the required documentation to our office for the committee's review. Expectations of examiners:

  • Participate on one site visit a year as opportunities permit
  • Participate on achievement report evaluations each year
  • Attend Shingo Examiner update training every three years (no charge)
  • Be an advocate of The Shingo Prize
  • Continue your personal lean development
  • Be involved in lean implementation efforts
  • Be a great ambassador for The Shingo Prize

Pre-requisites to become a Shingo Prize Examiner:

  • Principle level experience and understanding  (5 - 7 years of increasing leadership/management level)
  • Approved application form
  • Full resume and non disclosure conflict of interest form on file at the Shingo Prize office
  • 3 references with written approval to contact, who are knowledgeable about your lean experiences.  Please provide full contact information for each reference.
  • Documented leadership in Improvement events with results and activity required
  • Completion of Shingo 100 online, Shingo Approach to Operational Excellence workshop (Shingo 101), and Shingo 102E Exam online 
  • One completed site visit examination with a satisfactory Team Leader evaluation
